CEC Youth Ministry

One of the priorities within the ministries of Classis Eastern Canada is youth ministry within each local church. This area is growing and we are experiencing many blessings and challenges as we seek to encourage leaders and churches in this vital ministry. Within our 20 churches youth ministry is alive with 90% cultivating healthy teen ministries. Also encouraging is that 25% of those same churches are accomplishing this with full or part time youth ministry staff. Each active youth ministry is also led by an average minimum of 3 adult volunteer leaders.

Part of the success of this ministry growth can be attributed to a proactive philosophy towards youth ministry that incorporates a Classis Youth Ministry Team and a part time staff person known as the Classis Youth Ministry Coordinator.

OUR VISION: The Classis Youth Ministry Team exists to initiate, facilitate, and support youth ministry and leadership development within the churches of Classis Eastern Canada . To accomplish this, the CYMT will seek to respond within the following key ministry elements.

Networking/Consulting – Through consistent communication, interaction, and ministry consultation with local church youth leaders we determine both ministry and leadership needs.

Advocacy – Through interaction and accountability with classis and local church leadership on key youth ministry issues we advocate on such items as an abuse policy and overall church ownership and development of youth ministry.

Shepherding/Mentoring – Each member of the classis youth ministry team is assigned a group of churches where they maintain consistent monthly contact to help and encourage youth leaders.

Leadership Development – We are committed to providing an annual leadership training day for both adult and student leaders in both the east and west regions of classis. Smaller training events in local churches are also done as needs are identified.

Resources – We address the area of youth ministry resources by purchasing, maintaining, and promoting the use of a resource lending library. We also carry on a continual practice of evaluating new resources as we are made aware of them.

Classis Youth Ministry Events – With the exception of July, August, and December we plan and implement a full year of classis youth events that are done either in partnership with local churches or are the responsibility of the classis youth ministry team. To get the latest information about upcoming classis youth events check out the “Classis Youth Ministry Events” page or contact the Classis Youth Ministry Coordinator (link: Classis Youth Ministry Events).

OUR STRUCTURE – Youth ministry within Classis Eastern Canada is the responsibility of each local church council. The Classis Youth Ministry Team, consisting of appointed representatives from various churches, has been created and mandated by classis to assist and come alongside churches to train leaders, provide resources, plan events and more. The daily administration for these youth ministry initiatives rests with the Classis Youth Ministry Coordinator in coordination with the Classis Youth Ministry Team.

The Classis Youth Ministry Coordinator is a part-time staff person who is responsible for the communication and implementation of classis youth ministry initiatives. The coordinator is accountable to the Classis Youth Ministry Team and meets with them bi-monthly.

Our present CYMC is Rev. Brian Barr who can be reached at his home office located at 10424 Hainsville Road, Brinston , ON , K0E 1C0 . His home office number is 613-652-4111 and his e-mail address is .

OUR MINISTRY TARGETS – In general, the mandate of the Classis Youth Ministry Team is to encourage and develop youth ministry within the classis. Our primary focus is senior high youth ministry which includes teens from grades 9 through 12 or age 14 through 18 years.

Our secondary focus will become the early teen age group as we get the first area of concern on a more firm foundation. It is our belief that a strong early teen ministry program will help set the stage for a stronger high school youth program. This early teen group includes young people from grades 7 through 8 or from age 12 through 14 years. The one initiative that we believe all churches can take in this is to include early teen youth in our youth services and possibly in a few church youth ministry events each year. This will build an anticipation in our early teen age group and make their transition into the senior youth program easier and more natural.

The Classis Youth Ministry Team will also be responsible for formulating a ministry plan for young adult ministry, which is primarily the age group from 19 through 25 years. At present we are reviewing the ministry mandate of the CYMT to determine when and how we may affect ministry in all three ministry targets.

OTHER MINISTRY PROJECTS – The Classis Youth Ministry Team is also working on two key youth ministry projects.

 1. Youth Ministry Abuse Policy – The CYMT, in partnership with the Classical Abuse Committee and the local church, is working on a ministry abuse policy for youth ministry participants. To develop a safe and growing ministry environment there is a need to have an abuse policy in place that can be adopted by all classis youth ministries.

 2. Youth Leader Start-Up Kit – The idea behind this ministry tool is to develop a package of material that the CYMC or a member of the CYMT would deliver personally to new youth leaders in our churches. The purpose of this kit would be to welcome and initiate new leaders to resources, events, and personnel available to them. This kit would include a welcome letter, a published list of classis youth events, a lending library catalogue, an introduction to the CYMT and an introduction of the CYMC, a copy of the abuse policy, and a leadership profile package. Other items would be added as needed.
